Homowo: Madina MP Supports Vulnerable, Ga Communities With Food Items And Cash Donation
The Member of Parliament for Madina, Hon. Dr. Francis-Xavier Sosu, has donated food items and cash to vulnerable residents and Ga communities in the constituency as part of activities marking this year’s Homowo festival.
The donation was made through the MP’s Compassion Outreach programme, which targets the aged, the sick, and other vulnerable persons who may be unable to fully participate in the festivities due to their circumstances.
Items distributed included bags of rice, cooking oil, maize, and an undisclosed amount of cash support. Some of the beneficiaries are currently receiving care at home while others are on admission at various health facilities.
Speaking during the presentation, Dr. Sosu said the initiative was to extend the joy and significance of Homowo to every household in Madina, regardless of their condition.

“Homowo is a season of thanksgiving and sharing. We decided to use this period to reach out to our vulnerable brothers and sisters, especially our aged and those who are sick, so they can also feel the celebration,” he said.
Homowo, celebrated by the Ga people of the Greater Accra Region, commemorates a historic period of famine and the abundant harvest that followed. The name, which translates as “hooting at hunger,” has become a symbol of resilience, thanksgiving, and community unity.
Beyond the festive donation, the MP used the occasion to highlight key development interventions being undertaken in the constituency.
According to him, the Madina Job Centre, an employment and entrepreneurship initiative established by his office, has so far impacted over 15,000 people through job placements, skills training, and business support.
He added that health interventions, educational support, and scholarship schemes are also ongoing to improve livelihoods in the area.
On infrastructure, Dr. Sosu admitted that poor roads remain one of the biggest challenges facing Madina. He disclosed that while several road projects have been awarded on contract, some contractors are yet to return to site, expressing optimism that the issues will be resolved before the end of his current term.

The MP further revealed that efforts are underway to push for the upgrade of Madina from a municipality to a metropolitan status, citing rapid population growth. He noted that the population of Madina has grown from about 100,000 a decade ago to an estimated 250,000 currently.
Touching on security during the Homowo celebrations, Dr. Sosu described Madina as a peaceful and cosmopolitan community, and assured residents of adequate measures to ensure incident-free festivities.
“Our traditional leaders, religious leaders, the Municipal Chief Executive, security agencies and all stakeholders are working together to maintain peace before, during and after the celebrations,” he said.
He urged residents to celebrate responsibly and wished all Ga communities and residents of Madina a peaceful and joyful
