OFFICE OF HON. F-X SOSU LAUNCHES ANNUAL “COMMUNITY LEGAL CLINIC”

Office of the Member of Parliament (MP) for Madina Constituency Lawyer Francis Xavier Sosu and his Law Firm in partnership with Atuguba & Associate and Centre for Practical Multidisciplinary Legal Education and Training (CPMLET) of University of Professional Studies Accra (UPSA) launched an initiative dubbed “COMMUNITY LEGAL CLINIC‘’to respond to the many legal issues and needs of his constituents and offer practical experience to law students as well.

The MP’s statement which was read by his Head Of Business, Timothy Thatchroot due to the absence of the MP for an equally important duty, indicated that, the recent 2021 budget details revealed that there are only forty lawyers with legal Aid department in the whole Country. With less than ten thousand lawyers in Ghana , bringing the ratio of about One lawyer to three thousand people in Ghana. He mentioned that, this motivated him to organize the legal clinic to provide a platform for people who need legal aid services, to be assisted by professionals and seasoned lawyers .

The program also seeks to assist law students to have a practical experience on the field by interacting with professional lawyers as they consult for people with legal issues in the community.

He called on government to as a matter of urgency increase access to law school which has been retrogressive and discriminatory against the 1992 Constitution, which stipulates that government must ensure equal access to educational opportunities.

People within Madina Constituency were allowed to engaged in a one on one discussion with lawyers to seek legal advise and assistance as well.

The Dean of the faculty of University of Ghana School of Law and senior partner of Atuguba & Associates, Professor Raymond Atuguba in his key note address indicated that, every aspect of human life is governed by laws and affected by Law. He indicated that, his Law Firm decided to partner with FX Law to reach out to the people in Madina Constituency to interact with them and find out thier concerns on law related issues as well as assist individuals who qualify for free legal Aid Services.

He called on all stakeholders in the legal fraternity to provide legal education to people and offer free legal services when necessary.

The Dean of Center for Practical Multidisciplinary Legal Education and Training (CPMLET) of the University of Professional Studies Accra (UPSA) Godwin Adagewine was excited about the “community legal clinic”. He said this will be great platform to help broaden the knowledge of law students to have practical understanding of legal issues and impart their knowledge as well. He added that the partnership with the FX Law Firm and Atuguba & Associates will help provide the community with lawyering services.

Nii Otuboa III, The chief Of Pantang applauded Lawyer Francis Xavier Sosu for bringing such life-saving initiative to the door step of his community and Madina Constituency at large. He mentioned that he was not surprised about this initiative by the MP because, over the years, he has always supported people with legal issues without charging a fee.
