Strengthening Cultural Roots: MP Backs Local Language Reading Competition

The La Nkwatanang Madina Municipal Assembly came alive yesterday as the MP and MCE joined a vibrant celebration of culture and identity at an event organised by the Culture, Tourism and Creative Arts Department under the inspiring theme, “My Mother Tongue, My Pride.”

The highlight of the day was an exciting reading competition featuring local schools showcasing their fluency and confidence in indigenous languages , a powerful reminder that our languages are alive and thriving.

In his address, the MP, Hon Dr. Francis-Xavier Sosu, passionately underscored the importance of preserving our indigenous languages as a foundation for cultural pride, unity, and heritage. He urged parents to intentionally speak and teach local languages at home, stressing that language is the soul of a people.

The MCE, Hon Ibrahim Faila Fuseini, in his remarks, commended the initiative and noted that promoting local languages is central to preserving our history and shaping responsible future leaders. He reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to supporting programmes that celebrate culture, nurture young talent, and strengthen social cohesion within the municipality.

The event was graced by Assembly Men of the Constituency , representatives from the Ministry of Tourism, and traditional leaders from the Ewe, Ga, and Islamic communities within the constituency, among other distinguished guests.

It was truly a proud moment for culture, community, and the future of our children.
